Twelve Gates Leaders at Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council

The Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council convened an Interfaith Prayer Breakfast on May 2, 2024 at the Our Lady of Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Newport Beach, California, to honor this year’s,  2024 National Day of Prayer, which happens on the first Thursday of May each year.

The event was attended by Twelve Gates Foundation board member, Dr. Thomas Bowers and longtime Twelve Gates friend Brenda Lebsack, Founder of Interfaith Statewide Coalition

Faith leaders from 40 different local congregations attended the event. Representatives from many Christian and Jewish congregations joined in prayer with representatives from Muslim, Baha’i, Sikh and Jain fellowships. Community leaders also gave their support to the event. The mayors of local cities attended the event along with the Fire Chiefs and Police Chiefs from Irvine, Costa Mesa, and Newport Beach. Altogether there were 200 people at the gathering. Prayer bridged our diversity in an experience of unity which was palpably uplifting.

The choir of the 2nd Baptist Church of Santa Ana with Christian Scientist soloist Duane Williams opened the meeting with an invigorating song of praise. Designated faith leaders called upon God on behalf of our state, our communities, our county, our country, and the world.  These prayers created an atmosphere of reverence and worship which keynote speaker, Pastor Ivan S Pitts, stepped right into. He invited participants to join him in taking up the cause of breaking down barriers. He said that four years ago when there was tension between the police and the black community. He reached out to the local police and created a partnership to prepare police officers to have a positive experience with the black community. The program he started at that time continues to this day.

Board Member, Dr. Thomas Bowers presented the Twelve Gates Foundation’s mission to fellow participants and to Father Steve Sallot, pastor of the host church: Restore society-wide live and involvement in established faith communities. Father Sallot recommended  The Great DeChurching of America: Who’s Leaving, Why Are They Going, and What Will It Take to Bring Them Back? in light this Twelve Gates core mission.

Brenda Lebsack, sought to connect with faith leaders who share her concern of the welfare of  children in local schools.
